Family Friday...

On our last day of Spring Break, my hubby and I packed the kids up in the van and headed an hour away to Cathedral Caverns for some family/educational/adventure time. Michael, the oldest, had just finished up putting together a notebook for Alabama History, and one of the pictures we had printed was of this cave not far from us. This actually was the first time any of the kids had been inside a cave.

Their excitement and energy level was a tad bit overwhelming...
Michael certainly was "pumped". Literally.

They weren't so sure about this little adventure we were on once we started into this mammoth hole in the ground...
But they were troopers. My son even gave me....me who teaches high school science for a living...a lesson on the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite. Since he considers himself a scientist, I let him teach me the difference between the two. And of course, there were plenty of examples around us...
If you were wondering: "-tite" to hang tight to the ceiling, which would leave "mite" for the floor, and you might trip over it.
We even saw what used to be the trail that people took way before they paved a way for tour groups to walk...
The guide kept saying "billions of billions of years ago" which made my family break out into Patch the Pirate's song from Incrediworld: Billions and billions of years ago a frog jumped out of the sea...

If you've listened to this song 900 times like we have, you're probably singing it as you read the words...and then you'll be humming it for the rest of the day.

You're welcome.

But the piz de resistance of the tour was the "jewel" that the owner had used to sell his wife on the idea that, seriously, he hadn't wasted $4,000 for the cave and surrounding 461 acres.

This was 1952, after all.

But this...this was the highlight of the trip:
I took a panoramic but the pictures can't take your breath away like when you're there in person...
....and there's the smaller version.

All in all fun, family time and a great ending for Spring Break.
Simply Adventurous,

  1. Looks like so much fun! Word of warning: kids continue to try and “educate” their parents, even after they’re grown. 😉
